The Karachi Energy Conservation Programme is a social service initiative and an important facet of Karachi's energy usage policy, with a principal goal of saving 200MW of electricity in the city by 2011. The Programme is launched in partnership with the City District Government Karachi (CDGK) and the citizens of Karachi supported by Karachi Electric Supply Company. This is a movement for the city of Karachi which will involve, interact, communicate and eventually persuade the citizens of the city to own the drive and take responsibility to use electricity smartly and wisely. The cause should gain momentum to somehow bridge the gap of demand and supply of electricity and become a national movement with all energy related organisations joining this public service initiative of conservation.

This will only happen through a focus on reducing energy wastage - industrially, commercially and domestically - alongside increased efficiency through systematic operational gains - such as reducing line losses, improved system maintenance and creating action oriented programmes for the industrial as well as domestic customer.

It is easy to become overwhelmed when we look at "the big picture". Global warming, climate change, electricity load shedding and fuel shortages can make us all feel powerless. They are pretty big threats, and it is understandable if our knee-jerk response is: "but what can we do? " The answer is quite a lot.

That is where the idea of the power of one comes in. If each of us becomes aware of our own power when it comes to energy efficiency, and uses it properly, we can collectively make a big difference. By taking individual responsibility and changing our behaviour in small ways every day, we'll help save energy while we save money too.

All we have to do is recognise our power, and use it. It is what the power of one is all about.

The objectives of Energy Conservation Initiative are:

  • To promote energy conservation as a social service initiative with the scale and energy of a movement for the city of Karachi, its economy and citizens.
  • Awareness creation, action orientation and eventually ownership of the movement by the citizens (public and industry) of Karachi with KESC as the lead programme driver.
  • Tangible action orientation by setting defined metrics on energy usage reduction and launching action oriented interactive programmes. 200 megawatts in 2 years is our internal target which should be divided and cascaded down to various target audiences.
  • Platform Creation: A platform to be created by KESC for public, corporate and city partnership to make clear that the responsibility to improve electricity problem in Karachi in all regards is a collective one. CDGK, Phillips, KFC, Beacon House and City Schools and many more are already part of the platform.
